[144] The Reason Independent Hair Stylists šŸ˜° Donā€™t Hit Their Goals (And What to do Instead)

Hey Successful Hairstylists!!

Today weā€™re talking about hitting goals - or rather, the reason why independent hair stylists DONā€™T hit their goals - and what you can start doing instead!

((Keep scrolling for full video))

Setting goals can be exhausting ā€” at least it was for me for a really long time. Most of the time I would check in and see that I was SO FAR behind hitting my goal that Iā€™d give up way early (have you been there?). In 2016 something big clicked for me and I was able to really start seeing progress behind the chair. Did I want to hit a goal of selling $1,000 in retail to my guests that month? I HIT IT! Did I want to hit $9,000 in service sales in 30 days?? SMASHED IT! And Iā€™m confident this can work for you too.

In todayā€™s training, Iā€™m sharingā€¦

  • Stats on entrepreneurship in 2024 (spoiler: youā€™re doing something 84% of the adult population canā€™t/wonā€™t do)

  • The biggest reason independent hairstylists donā€™t hit their goals (itā€™s NOT what you think!!!)

  • The 2 life-changing actions I took to start hitting my goals quickly

In the age of the algorithm, we can start to feel like EVERYONE is doing what weā€™re doing. Our feed and online exposure can skew our way of thinking about the world. For me, this was the most clear when I started my online education business and I felt like LITERALLY everyone was doing the same thing. Maybe youā€™re feeling that way too. Like everyone in the beauty industry is a business owner, working on growing their clientele, specializing in what youā€™re specializing in.

But I want to show you somethingā€¦

16% of the adult workforce are actually entrepreneurs.*

Only half of small businesses are estimated to survive 5 years or more.***

13. 82% of small businesses fail because of cash flow issues.**

Over 40% of them fail because there is no market need for their products or services. **

19% say failure was due to being ā€œoutcompeted.ā€**

17% say it was because of their poor product offering. **

These statistics point to three main points.

One - you are rare. You are doing something that 84% of the adult population will not do. That is HUGE! You are doing something hard and complicated and brave!

Two - the MAJORITY of what you see other people and entrepreneurs doing online DOESNā€™T WORK. Hereā€™s the thing. You are going to have to show up in ways that other people are not willing to (or just donā€™t know how to). You are going to have to stop copying what you see online and start showing up with a TRUE strategy based on real business strategy.

Three - marketing is crucial to success!! I know youā€™re tired and some days you just want to do pretty hair and go home ā€” but good marketing can solve all of the reasons small business owners listed for failing. When you know HOW to communicate about what makes you different and how you take care of your clients, growing is EASY and steady.

So why are hair stylists struggling to hit their goals?

Lack Clear Goals

The go-to method for setting goals that you can achieve is to set S.M.A.R.T. goals! Instead of walking through what that means - Iā€™m going to give you examples so you can see the difference!

āŒ Get more clients
āŒ Make more money
āŒ Eat healthier

āœ”ļø Get 10 clients in the next 30 days
āœ”ļø Make $300 more every week
āœ”ļø Eat salad for dinner 3 nights a week

Tracking End Result

I am confident that you are already tracking monthly, weekly and maybe even at the end of every shift!

But are you tracking the RIGHT thing?

A lot of times the ONLY thing we track is the end result of the goal weā€™re working towards.

For example, if our goal is to make $300 more every week. At the end of each day we will track our sales. And then say did we hit or did we not hit it. Are we on track or off track.

Here is a much more effective way!!

Instead of only tracking your end result, I want you to track your ACTIONS towards that end result.

In our example above, hereā€™s what we would track that week instead:

  • How many times you offered an add-on service

  • How many times you recommended a new service

  • How many new booking requests you got that week

  • How many times you posted that week

  • Sales for the week

Can you see the difference? We are not only tracking the end result, we are tracking our ACTIONS.

This helps us remember to TAKE the actions that produce the RESULTS!

Just by changing up this one thing - you will be able to see much more progress. If you are putting in the RIGHT actions, the results are guaranteed to follow.

Long timeline

Do you remember the goals you set this past January? ā€¦ 80% of people who make New Yearā€™s resolutions have given up by mid-February****.

When we set long-term goals, it is super hard to stay motivated and on track. For me, I would give up as soon as I saw how far behind my goal I was. It didnā€™t push me to try harder, it completely discouraged me.

What DID work for me was setting goals in very short timelines. 30 days works the best for me but Iā€™m also experimenting with a 12 week timeline after reading the 12 Week Year (Iā€™ll let you know how it goes). You see, itā€™s much easier to give your all and make sacrifices in the short-term. The real burnout comes from pushing as hard as you can and not seeing an end in sight.

So try out shorter timelines and see if you can build your endurance.

ā€”

I truly believe that YOU have everything it takes to build a fulfilling, profitable business behind the chair. Itā€™s just going to take trying things you havenā€™t done before.
