Instagram Mastery: 7 Ways Hairstylists Can Outshine the Competition

If you have ever felt like you’re swimming (or drowning) in a big sea of great hairstylists online and are struggling to set yourself apart - this is for YOU! While it’s not easy to see it this way, high competition is a super good thing. It means that there is high demand for what you are offering and tons of clients wanting to book appointments. The trick becomes, how do YOU make sure that when someone in your area is searching for a hair stylist - they choose YOUR name from the list? That is exactly what we’re talking about today!

((Keep scrolling for video version))

This training is for you if …

  • You’re in a super competitive area

  • The people you’re attracting from instagram are not the right fit (not wanting the services you specialize in, wanting discounts, not wanting to take care of their hair or make a long term plan)

  • You’re not enjoying instagram anymore and just going through the motions

WHY STANDING OUT ON INSTAGRAM IS A GOOD THING

  • You can actually attract the right people

  • It’s easier to stay consistent when it feels authentic

  • You won’t feel so clammed up! A lot of times when we’re blocked on what to post, it’s because we’re trying to “BE” or “FIT” something that we’re not.

Here are 7 FUN ways hair stylists can outshine their competition on Instagram

1 Show Personality and Behind-the-Scenes Content:

I want you to know something BIG… there is only ONE you. Only one person in this world who has had your experiences, journey, background, thought processes, etc. You are truly magical and unique and it’s time to really start sharing that MORE. A lot of times, I see hair stylists put themselves into a box when they show up on Instagram - thinking they need to put on a persona or be overly professional. It is truly time for you to be you. This is the only way you can guarantee that you’ll attract clients that LOVE you and value your talents.

    • Personal Connection: Share personal stories, experiences, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your work and daily life. This helps followers connect with you on a personal level.

    • Process Videos: Show the transformation during appointments, including techniques BUT - instead of talking about your technique, talk about your passion and heart. Why you do what you do. Talk about the inner and outer transformation your client experienced in that visit.

2 Educate and Inform:

It can sometimes be easy to forget that our Instagram pages aren’t just about us. They are for our CLIENTS and to make more money in our businesses! The good thing about this is that it takes the pressure off of you. When you can show up and just educate your audience on common problems and frequently asked questions you will be amazed at how much traction you’re able to build.

    • Tutorials and Tips: Share how-to videos, styling tips, and hair care advice. Educational content positions you as an expert in your field.

    • Q&A Sessions: Use Instagram Stories or Live sessions to answer common hair care questions and offer professional advice.

3 Engage with Your Audience:

When we’re burnt out from Instagram is easily to feel bored, annoyed and frustrated by it. One of the easiest ways to get yourself out of a funk is to make Instagram fun! Use all of the features, filters, interaction stickers, etc. to not only get your audience engaged - but to make your life less repetitive and boring!

    • Interactive Content: Use polls, quizzes, and interactive stickers on Instagram Stories to engage your audience.

    • Respond to Comments and DMs: Actively engage with your followers by responding to their comments and messages. Building a community fosters loyalty.

4 Leverage User-Generated Content:

Reach out to your clients when you see them post photos of their hair looking amazing in real life! These client selfies are an extra layer of “social proof” because it shows that your clients really do know how to make their hair look good when they’re not in the salon. This gives potential clients hope that they can feel the same way too. Plus everyone loves to have their 15 minutes of fame - once you start sharing these - don’t be surprised if more and more of your clients start tagging you!

  • Client Features: Encourage clients to share their new hairstyles and tag you. Repost these on your profile, showcasing real-life results and satisfied customers.

    • Testimonials: Share client reviews and testimonials to build trust and credibility.

5 Collaborate with Local Influencers / Business Owners:

Collaborations are another great way to make your marketing more FUN and PROFITABLE! When you do collabs with local influencers or other small business owners in your area you get access to 10x more people. It’s great to grow your network and cross promote each other so everybody wins.

  • Partnerships: Collaborate with local influencers, beauty bloggers, or other hairstylists to reach a broader audience.

    • Guest Appearances: Participate in Instagram Live sessions or guest posts on other profiles to gain exposure.

6 Showcase Unique Services and Promotions:

Instagram might make you think that EVERY HAIRSTYLIST out there is doing what you do. But, what you do is special. Remember, the everyday woman is not following 1,000’s of hairstylists and educators. She doesn’t know many of the classic or latest techniques. Do not let your algorithm steal your joy of what you do or trick you into thinking you’re just a “basic” hair stylists. Be confident and talk about the services you offer.

  • Special Services: Highlight any unique services you offer, such as organic treatments, exclusive products, or personalized consultations.

    • Promotions and Giveaways: Run contests, giveaways, or special promotions to attract new followers and engage existing ones.

7 Highlight Your Certifications and Achievements:

A lot of times we share about our events, classes and certifications when we get them… and then NEVER AGAIN. I highly recommend talking about your education and skills on a regular basis!!

  • Professional Development: Share your certifications, awards, and any continuing education you pursue. This establishes you as a credible and skilled professional.

    • Industry Events: Post about any industry events or seminars you attend to show your commitment to staying updated with the latest trends.
